This added month was named "Mercedonius" and was inserted after February 23rd or 24th every two or three years. Despite this reform, the calendar still faced irregularities. It was not until the time of Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, that significant changes were made to the Roman calendar. Caesar consulted with the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes and implemented the Julian calendar. This new calendar featured 365 days with an extra day every four years, creating a 366-day year known as a "leap year." February, with its already reduced length, was chosen as the month for the leap day
